Nutrition labelling requirements in Moldova

Packaged food sold in Moldova must carry a nutrition declaration under Legea Nr. 279/2017 privind informarea consumatorului cu privire la produsele alimentare. This page covers the Moldova - Legea Nr. 279/2017 format: Moldovan transposition of EU 1169/2011, Romanian. A compliant Moldovan nutrition label declares 7 mandatory nutrients: energy, fat, of which saturates, carbohydrate, of which sugars, protein and salt. Values are declared per 100 g or 100 ml, with energy in both kJ and kcal, and salt rather than sodium. The panel is headed "Nutrition Declaration". Romanian is required on pack. There is no mandatory front-of-pack warning scheme. Moldova food labelling requirements under Law No. 279/2017

Moldova's food information rules are in Law No. 279/2017 on consumer information concerning food, adopted on 15 December 2017, published in the Official Monitor on 12 January 2018 and in force. It covers food supplied to final consumers, including food supplied by catering establishments.

The law states that it transposes EU Regulation 1169/2011, so it closely follows the EU model, but businesses must comply with the Moldovan law and its national amendments rather than the EU text.

Under Article 8, these are mandatory, subject to the law's derogations: the name of the food, ingredients, allergens, quantity of certain ingredients, net quantity, durability date, special storage or use conditions, the responsible business's name and address, origin where Article 24 requires it, instructions where needed, alcoholic strength for relevant drinks, and a nutrition declaration.

Mandatory Moldova nutrition declaration

A nutrition declaration is mandatory under Law No. 279/2017 unless an exemption applies. Under Article 28, the nutrition rules do not apply to food supplements or natural mineral waters.

The declaration shows energy and the amounts of fat, saturated fatty acids, carbohydrate, sugars, protein and salt. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat, polyols, starch, fibre and qualifying vitamins or minerals are voluntary additions.

Values per 100 g or 100 ml are mandatory under Article 31. Values per portion or consumption unit are voluntary under Article 32 and are normally given in addition to the per 100 g or 100 ml figures.

Romanian language rules for Moldova food labels

Romanian is mandatory for the compulsory food information. Article 13 requires the food business operator to present it in Romanian, directly on the package or on the label.

Other languages may be added voluntarily. The National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) has reminded businesses that another language can appear on the package but cannot replace the Romanian information.

ANSA labelling control and imported food

Imported food must meet Moldova's labelling rules before it is placed on the market. ANSA states that the importer is responsible for making sure the mandatory information is available in Romanian before sale.

ANSA monitors compliance with food labelling rules and applies the measures in the law when it finds problems. Information must not mislead consumers, and the same particulars apply to imported and domestic food.

The official sources do not set one required sticker format for every import, so the requirement to meet is that complete and accurate Romanian information is present before the food is sold.
