Nutrition labelling requirements in the EU
Packaged food sold in the EU must carry a nutrition declaration under Nutri-Score v2 (2024 revision): France, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Luxembourg (voluntary). This page covers the EU - Nutri-Score ★ (2024 v2) format: Voluntary 5-letter FoP A/B/C/D/E; France/DE/NL/BE/ES/CH/LU adoption. A compliant EU nutrition label declares 7 mandatory nutrients: energy, fat, of which saturates, carbohydrate, of which sugars, protein and salt. Values are declared per 100 g or 100 ml, with energy in both kJ and kcal, and salt rather than sodium. The scheme itself uses grades A to B to C to D to E and 5 colour bands, and is applied on pack. The panel is headed "Nutrition Declaration". The scheme is voluntary, so it is not required on pack. NFL builds a print-ready EU nutrition label from your recipe, applying the rounding rules and reference intakes for the EU automatically, and exports it as PDF, PNG, SVG, JPG or EPS.

Key facts
Front-of-pack scheme: how it works in the EU
Voluntary EU-wide, adopted by France, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Luxembourg.
What the Nutri-Score label means and whether it is mandatory
Nutri-Score is a voluntary front-of-pack nutrition label. It sits on top of the mandatory nutrition declaration that Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 requires, and does not replace it. The label grades a product on a five-letter scale, A to E, shown from dark green to dark orange: A is the most favourable nutritional profile under the Nutri-Score algorithm and E the least favourable.
Front-of-pack schemes like this are permitted under Article 35 of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, which allows additional forms of expression of the nutrition declaration when its conditions are met. Like all voluntary food information, the label must also meet Article 36: it must not mislead and must not be ambiguous or confusing.
Using the label is voluntary, but the rules become mandatory once a company opts in. A food business that wants to use the Nutri-Score trademark must register for the right to use it and then follow the Nutri-Score Usage Regulations, the calculation rules and the graphic charter. Registration includes a commitment covering the products sold under the registered brand or brands.
Nutri-Score was introduced in France in 2017 and is in force as the recommended scheme in seven countries: France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, each through its own national framework.
How is Nutri-Score calculated?
The nutri score calculation is based on the composition of 100 g or 100 mL of the product, not on the serving size the manufacturer chooses. The algorithm in force awards points for components whose intake should be limited and subtracts points for favourable components.
For general foods, the nutri score formula considers:
- Unfavourable components: energy, sugars, saturated fatty acids and salt.
- Favourable components: fibre, protein, and the share of qualifying fruits, vegetables and legumes.
- The final score is the unfavourable points minus the favourable points. For products that score high on unfavourable components, the counting of protein points is restricted, under the rules set out in the 2022 update report.
- Category-specific cut-offs then convert the final score into a letter: the lower the score, the closer to A.
Separate calculation rules apply to fats, oils, nuts and seeds, and to beverages. A manufacturer should first identify the correct Nutri-Score product category, then apply that category's rules, rather than running every product through the general-food formula.

Nutri-Score criteria for beverages and special products
The updated beverage algorithm, in force since the 2024 update, treats milk, milk-based drinks, fermented milk drinks and plant-based drinks as beverages. This was a significant change from the earlier approach, where several of these products were scored as general foods.
The beverage calculation looks at energy, sugars, protein, fruit and vegetable content, fibre and salt, on beverage-specific point scales. It now also counts the presence of non-nutritive sweeteners against a drink, which moves most diet sodas from B down to the C to E range.
Water has a special position: it is the only beverage that can be classified A. Every other drink, however favourable its profile, starts from B.
Nutri-Score does not assess every characteristic of a food. Belgian public-health guidance states that the calculation does not account for portion size, pesticide residues, allergens or additives as separate criteria. The score is a nutrient profiling tool, not a complete safety or health assessment.
What changed in the 2024 Nutri-Score algorithm update?
The revised algorithm was developed by the transnational Nutri-Score Scientific Committee, which published the update for foods in 2022 and for beverages in 2023. Between 30 and 40 percent of products change score under the new method, without any change to the recipe.
Key changes now in force:
- Products high in sugar or salt are scored more strictly in several categories.
- Fibre and protein criteria were revised, improving the separation between whole-grain and refined products and favouring poultry and fatty fish over red meat.
- Fats, oils, nuts and seeds were rescored so that differences within the category show more clearly.
- Milk, milk-based drinks, fermented milk drinks and plant-based drinks moved into the beverage algorithm.
- Non-nutritive sweeteners now count against a beverage.
- Water remains the only beverage eligible for A.
The updated algorithm has been in force since 1 January 2024 in Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and the Netherlands. In France it entered into force on 16 March 2025, after the national regulatory procedure.
Nutri-Score products, registration and transition rules
EU food information law does not make Nutri-Score mandatory: a product sold in a country that supports the scheme does not have to carry it. The mandatory nutrition declaration remains governed by Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011.
Once an operator registers to use the Nutri-Score trademark, following the Usage Regulations and graphic specifications is mandatory. Santé publique France states that registration includes a commitment to use the logo on the products placed on the market under the registered brand or brands, within the scope and conditions the Usage Regulations set.
The move to the updated algorithm is transitional. Operators have two years after the new method takes effect in their country to bring packaging into line; in France that period runs from 16 March 2025.
During the transition, a voluntary "new calculation" indication may be used to show that a Nutri-Score was calculated with the revised algorithm, where the graphic and usage rules allow it.
