Nutrition labelling requirements in El Salvador

Packaged food sold in El Salvador must carry a nutrition declaration under RTCA 67.01.60:10. This page covers the El Salvador - RTCA 67.01.60:10 format: Same RTCA base via MINSAL / Dirección de Salud Ambiental. A compliant Salvadoran nutrition label declares 9 mandatory nutrients: energía, proteínas, grasa total, grasa saturada, grasa trans, carbohidratos totales, azúcares totales, fibra dietética and sodio. Values are declared per serving as sold, with energy in kcal, and sodium rather than salt. The panel is headed "Información Nutricional". Spanish is required on pack. There is no mandatory front-of-pack warning scheme. El Salvador adopts RTCA 67.01.60:10 rather than writing its own labelling text, so a label built to that standard travels across every market that adopted it. NFL builds a print-ready Salvadoran nutrition label from your recipe, applying the rounding rules and reference intakes for El Salvador automatically, and exports it as PDF, PNG, SVG, JPG or EPS.

El Salvador food labelling under RTCA 67.01.07:10

El Salvador applies the Central American Technical Regulation RTCA 67.01.07:10 on general labelling of prepackaged foods (COMIECO Resolution 280-2012), in force. The particulars that apply to a food are mandatory:

  • the food's name, describing its true nature, with any brand or fantasy name added alongside it;
  • ingredients and net contents;
  • the sanitary registration number, labelled as such;
  • the responsible business's name and address, and for imports the Salvadoran importer or distributor and country of origin;
  • lot identification and date marking; and
  • storage conditions and instructions for use when needed.

Labels must not be false, misleading or likely to create a wrong impression.

Nutrition labelling under RTCA 67.01.60:10

RTCA 67.01.60:10 is in force, but it does not require a nutrition panel on every food. Its rules are mandatory for prepackaged foods that carry nutrition information or nutrition or health claims.

When a declaration is given, the basic items are energy, total fat, saturated fat, carbohydrates, sodium and protein, with the regulation's exceptions. Energy is in kJ, with kcal optional, per 100 g, per 100 ml or per serving if the number of servings is stated; protein, carbohydrates, fibre and fat are in grams.

Vitamins and minerals may be given in units, as a percentage of the reference value, or both.

Spanish labels and complementary labels for imports

Spanish is mandatory for the required information. If an imported product's label is in another language, a complementary Spanish label must be added before the product is sold.

The complementary label must reflect the original accurately, though the product name may follow the RTCA or Codex name. It must not cover the original name, net contents, expiry date, drained weight or lot.

For sanitary registration of imports, the label or artwork must be submitted, including the complementary label where the RTCA requires one.

Sanitary registration and the Superintendencia de Regulación Sanitaria

Sanitary registration is mandatory for processed foods and beverages within El Salvador's registration system before they are sold. Imports need an application, ingredient details, label documents and a certificate from the exporting country's authority, among other requirements.

The responsible authority changed in 2024. Since 7 August 2024, under the Law of the Superintendencia de Regulación Sanitaria, competence for food and beverage registration and related establishments has moved to the Superintendencia de Regulación Sanitaria (SRS). Older Ministry of Health (MINSAL) documents still hold the RTCA texts, but MINSAL is no longer the registration authority for ordinary foods.

El Salvador has no mandatory general front-of-pack warning or traffic light label; nutrition and health claims are governed by RTCA 67.01.60:10.
